spauskite, kad iðdidintiAt the end of 19th century Lithuanian pharmacies started producing the original mixture of herbs “Trejos devynerios”. The remained documents are kept at the “Lithuanian Museum of the History of Medicine and Pharmacy” show, that this mixture of herbs was first produced in Ţemaitija (Lowland). It was first produced in the pharmacy of Palanga. The leaflet informed that the pack of herbs should be infused by one bottle of “monopolistic (exclusive) vodka” and kept twenty – four hours. The extract produced nowadays follows the old practice.

The extract differed by several ingredients in each pharmacy. On the second of March in 1925 “Farmacijos ţinios” newspaper reports, that “Trejos devynerios” known long ago even before war is produced in the pharmacy of Palanga and it has concurents, that’s why “Trejos devynerios” created by the pharmacist A. The most part of medicinal herbs composing “Trejos devynerios” since ancient times were used in medicine and folk medicine. They were described by the famous scientists of the old times, who specified effect and purpose of medicine: Theocrat, Dioskurid, Virgilijus, Hypocrite, Galen and others. The usage of “Trejos devynerios” was legalized in the period between the wars because this medicine was included into “The list of patent medicine permitted to produce in Lithuania” (“Farmacijos ţinios”, issue No 3, 1929; issue No 12, 1931; issue No 1 and No 4, 1933). It is suggested that Lithuanian recipe of “Trejos devynerios” goes back to the 15th – 16th century. An extract of similar composition in Latvia was known as Riga Balsam. It has medical properties for treating the stomach and intestines and has been used for over 250 year and has been produced according to the recipe of Abracham Kunce (16 ingredients). The fact that this old Lithuanian recipe reached West Europe could be proved by reading the labels of “Kreuter Micke” (bitter herbs) produced in Leipheim, Germany. It is said there that this is a mixture of 27 herbs, prepared according to an original recipe of the ancient Lithuanian monks (the package is still kept in the museum mentioned above). Besides in Poland “Trejos devynerios” is well known as “Trojanka Litewska” and it is rather popular over there. “Trejos devynerios” is famous not only here, but also oversea countries. It was produced in Chicago (USA) for a long time.
